How We Unpack, Separate and Freeze our Zaycon Fresh Chicken

For the past few years we have been alerting you to Zaycon Fresh chicken and their sales on various items including ground beef and the boneless skinless chicken breasts. We have ordered their chicken breasts 4 times now and the quality is very high.

What is Zaycon Fresh? Well, it is an online site where you can place an order for direct from the farm meats at fantastic prices. You can learn more about Zaycon Fresh by watching this short video below or by checking out the Zaycon Fresh website.

Anyway, back to the chicken.

When you place your order for chicken you are ordering 40 pounds. That is a lot of chicken and it means when the chicken comes home with you there is a little bit of work to be done. We freeze ours which is probably what you will do as well. Some people we know split the order with a family member or friend; we keep all 40 pounds to ourselves and separate it into single breast halves. This works best for us; if I am making something like a chicken pot pie that doesn’t require much chicken for the recipe I can pull out just one breast half. Alternatively, if I am going to be grilling chicken breasts for dinner I simply thaw as many single servings as I need.

The chicken comes in a large coated cardboard box.

Lining the box inside are 2 very very thick plastic bags; for this shipment the chicken breasts were in 4 smaller thick plastic bags inside the box.

There is no leaking of yucky chicken liquids because of the high quality bags they use for transporting.

My method is that I use my trusty saran wrap that I buy from Sam’s Club, shown below.

One of these boxes lasts us for years – seriously! I mark the date when I buy it on the back and I checked it today when I took this photo. We have had this box since 2013! I think they run about $13 and I am going to guess this will get us through the end of the year. Check it out next time you are at Sam’s Club (Costo probably has something similar).

Anyway, I put the breast on the cutting board and cut it in half, giving me 2 pieces. I wrap each piece in saran wrap twice.

In the end I have quite a pile of wrapped chicken breasts:

I then pull out my Hefty or Ziploc plastic bags and put 5 to 6 in a bag and put the date on the bag. Then they go in the deep freezer.

This entire process took me about 30 minutes. For us, it is so well worth the little bit of effort to have so much meat frozen for future meals. Having meat that I can easily defrost for dinners saves us a lot of money in the long run; it helps to curb those take-outs and pizza dinner expenses.

Hopefully this gives you a better glimpse into how the Zaycon Fresh chicken breasts come and how you can quickly and easily make them work for your household. One day I’ll find a vacuum sealer at a garage sale, hopefully, and then I can try that method of storing the meat.
