How to Contact a Company About a Defective Product

It happens to all of us at some point or another, we buy an item and once we start to use it we realize that it is defective.  Or maybe it just doesn’t perform like you think it should.  What do you do in that instance?  Do you set the item aside and forget about it?  What if it is too late to return it to the store, then what?

We encourage you not to waste money by forgetting about it.  It’s super simple to reach out to the company and tell them about your issue.  Most companies like to hear from their customers and even though you are telling them bad news about one of their items they value that input because it can assist them in making changes to prevent future unhappy customers.

Usually if you look on the box or bottle or item you will see the manufacturer’s details.  Look for a website or a phone number and contact them.  If you write an email be sure to give them the specifics of the product including the name, size, variety, etc.

For example, we have a can of Aussie Aussome Volume Hair Spray that we are unhappy with.  When I first started using it I loved it, but after about 1 week it stopped spraying a smooth stream of hair spray and now it comes out in blobs that rest on my hair and dry.  It’s not attractive, it is not how it is supposed to work and most of all it is not what I paid for.

I looked on the can and see that they have a phone number and a website listed.

Today I visited their website and see that they have a “contact us” button.  Usually these buttons are found on the bottom of the company’s page (see below) Personally I would rather jot a quick email vs. calling them on the phone, but it is up to you what you feel more comfortable doing.

I clicked the “contact us” button and this is what I sent:

“I bought this Aussome Volume hair spray (the 10 ounce bottle) and started using it. At first, I loved it. About 1 week into using it the hair spray began to shoot out in clumps and blobs, resting and drying on my hair this way. It was unattractive and annoying. I have tried cleaning the aerosol sprayer under hot water, twisting it around to try and loosen any dried spray and shaking it really well.

Nothing has stopped it from clumping and spraying blobs. I like the hair spray, it holds well, but the sprayer is a big issue.

Not only do I have this can, but I have a 2nd can as well that is doing the same thing.

What can be done about this problem? I thank you for taking the time to read this note and I look forward to hearing from you with a resolution.

Sincerely,
Kelli”

You will notice that above all, I was nice.  Kindness goes a long way in life and when writing a letter of complaint that is no exception.  In our experience a kindly worded letter seems to fetch the best response.  Once we hear back from Aussie about our issue above, we will update you.  My expectation is that they will offer to refund my money or send me a voucher for another one of their products for free.  We will have to wait and see.

What do you have at home that you have been dissatisfied with?  Don’t just chalk it up to experience, take a little time to reach out to the company and let them know.  They will appreciate your feedback and you may just end up getting your money back or at least something to use in that item’s place.

It’s your money and you work hard for it – don’t waste it!
