Do you subscribe to your local newspaper and have it delivered right to your mailbox? We do, and while there have been times that I have contemplated cancelling the subscription I must admit if I am totally honest that I do enjoy the paper.
How to save money on a newspaper subscription
Ever since I was little I remember my Dad coming home from a day of work and relaxing while reading the paper. We had a subscription to the paper when I was little and I’d walk out to the mailbox to get the paper for dad almost daily. I grew up on the outskirts of the city so our newspaper carriers did not toss the paper on the porch because the driveways were too long!
When we moved from our home 10 years ago to our magical home in the woods in our sleepy village we kept our newspaper subscription to our hometown active. (Our little village doesn’t have a newspaper). The paper used to come out each day, but about 2 years ago they changed the delivery to Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Funny thing about that, the subscription price did not go down when the frequency of the papers went down.
Our monthly paper subscription was $13.95. We had it automatically deducted from our checking account each month so we really didn’t notice the money going out each month.
Recently we were examining our budget and since we buy Sunday papers anyway (extra copies for coupons of a larger metro area paper) I figured I could cut out the local paper. I called to cancel the subscription and the customer service person inquired as to why I was cancelling. When I explained, he offered to drop the cost to $11.50 a month. That is a $2.45 savings per month, or $29.40 a year.
All it took was one simple phone call. Go ahead, call your local paper service and ask for a discount; it can’t hurt to try!
