Last night we were at Kroger doing our “shop” for the week. Our Kroger stores are great and we love to shop there, but they will only double 3 like coupons at a time. So that means that we each take a cart and each check out separately when we are there. It’s no big deal, and for the savings we get at Kroger we’ll practically jump through hoops. (And to think, “pre-couponing we NEVER shopped at Kroger…).
It was late at night and we strolled up to the Self Scan checkouts. Jim went first, and I waited behind him because we don’t like to tie up several registers and we check out and redeem our coupons. Anyway, Jim finished and then I scooted up to begin my transaction and I notice a woman step up to use the Self Scan checkout that is directly in back of mine. I didn’t notice what she had in her cart, I just kept on ringing up my order. I then overheard her ask a Kroger employee if she could use their Kroger card because she had left hers in the car. The employee explained that she couldn’t do that; something with her being an employee and not letting customers scan her card. So….the lady looked my way and asked if I would scan my Kroger card on her order so she could get the discounts.
I immediately said sure because I knew that I’d get whatever points she accumulated on my Kroger card towards the fuel points. I swiped the card on her scanner and went back to my order. Shortly afterward Jim kind of whispered in my ear to glance back at her cart and what she was buying. Oh my gosh! She was buying oodles and oodles of meat; whole loins, jumbo family packs, etc. The last glance we saw she was at $189 and still ringing.
As I packed up my order and we started to leave we stopped her and explained that she is really missing out by not using her Kroger cards to accumulate the points and save off gas. She then proceeded to tell us that she is a Speedway customer and she uses the Speedway card to accumulate points. She never gets gas at Kroger. Well, Jim has a Speedway card too and he racks up the points on it, but it in no way sheds any light on the per gallon savings we get at Kroger. She asked a few questions and we explained the benefits, but we could just tell she wasn’t going to stop going to Speedway for gas.
Amazing, right? Talk about being in the right place at the right time! We proceeded to fill up at Kroger at a savings of $0.50 per gallon (we thought we’d get $0.30 off a gallon with what we had earned)!
Thankfully Jim had brought along the gas cans for the lawn mower so we could buy as much gas as we possibly could at this amazing price. We’re still unsure of how many points we have left because Miss Forgot My Card was still ringing up her meat. We’ll know next time we scan our card.
I wonder if she shops every Wednesday night and I wonder if she’d like to use our Kroger card again? A girl can dream, right?
Happy saving!
I had a small order at Kroger the other day, but was still disappointed to realize at checkout that I had forgotten my Kroger card. The gal asked for my phone number, but it didn’t register (don’t know why, it’s the only number I’d ever use). I don’t know what she programmed into the little terminal since she turned it toward her, but I walked out with a discount as if I’d used my card.
