Walmart is a store that we just never seem to have too much luck at when it comes to cooking up scores using coupons. We have tried a few times (maybe 4) since we adopted our couponing ways and always left feeling like it wasn’t really worth stopping.
So why did we go there last night? Because they had the Febreze warmers for $2.47 and we had $3 coupons and because we had seen quite a few other bloggers praising the deals they have gotten there. So armed with our coupons for what we could get for free or dirt cheap we headed to a Walmart about 20 minutes north of us.
Here is the result:
As you can see, we did pretty well. Total out of pocket before tax was $5.82! (Before coupon total was $36.29, so we saved 84%)
Why we loved this trip:
- Price matching was easy and hassle free. We had been to Walgreens to buy the Planters peanut butter 2/$3 and they were sold out. Walmart matched their price right at the register when I showed the ad. I was then able to use my $0.75 off coupons to score $0.75 peanut butter!
- Overage! Walmart is awesome in that they pay overage. So on each Tide that was $0.97, we made $0.03 because the coupons were for $1 off. Same with the Cascade $1 coupon!
- Freebies! The Tide, Cascade, Febreze Warmers, Renuzit cone air fresheners and the Glade candle refills were all free! (Check your store’s Clearance area because that is where we found the candle refills marked down to $2 and the Febreze Warmers with the covers. They were marked down to $3; this was cool since the regular priced ones we had set out to buy were sold out.)
I should add too that using our coupons was a snap at Walmart. A couple beeped but the cashier just worked her key magic and they went through. We are going to be more open about shopping at Walmart now.
What are your feelings about Walmart and shopping with coupons?

I use to only shop at Walmart before coupons. But lately, like you said, I haven’t had much luck at all so I pretty much gave up. I see other people post pricing on certain items from other states but when I get to our Walmart here in MO, the item ALWAYS costs more. Frustrating. I seem to shop way more now at Walgreens then ever before because of their deals, coupons and RR.
i don’t have luck at walmart either, but i’m gonna try again you have inspired me, lol. i like to get free stuff!
Walmart is a favorite of ours too! Some Walmart’s are better than others. Never had a problem with price matching! They also are good at letting you use a coupon on gift sets as well, making even better deals!
I also went to the Bay City Walmart last night and they were out of everything I wanted……Bummer! I guess there are more coupon savvy people in Bay City than up north. My bad luck……your score!
I just started couponing I’m a total newbie and I found it very easy to do at Walmart. Hassle free and easy.
I do Walmart at the end of the month when I have coupons expiring. (1) I have used the ones that I can double at another store (up to 50cents here); I have used the ones together w/store coupons at Walgreens; and basically these are the coupons that just didn’t get used. I figure WM has as good of a price as anyone out there unless there is a sale and I have already taken advantage of those deals. What is left goes to Coups for Troops. Before I go to WM I ck my flyers for prices that I can get matched. Especially on veg/fruits.
