This post is being written because we have just experienced a mind blowing thrifty shopping lesson and we thought it would be well worth passing on to our readers, especially if you have to purchase your own prescription medicine.

We are blessed that even though we are self employed, we are able to afford to carry health insurance on ourselves.  Our coverage varies because we have different carriers;  Jim’s insurance is actually much better than mine except it doesn’t cover prescriptions.  For a long time we’ve been members of Sam’s Club and have gotten our scripts filled there.  However Sam’s Club is about a 35 mile drive so we don’t run there at the drop of a hat.

Jim had a prescription that needed to be filled and we were in the midst of a really hectic couple of days so I thought I would save time and a car trip by calling around locally to price shop the medicine.  I was willing to pay a little bit more for the convenience of not having to drive (gasp, right?  Yes, it is true!).

I called 5 places and inquired about the same medication, same strength and dosage.  I was blown away by the wide gap in the quotes.  I should say every place I called was friendly and very willing to do a price check for me.  I got the distinct impression they are often asked that so don’t be afraid to call and check around.

This is what I discovered:

  • Walmart = $79.62
  • Walgreens = $119.99 ($83.49 if I had their discount card I was told)
  • Private local pharmacy = $109.99
  • Rite Aid = $121.59
  • Sam’s Club = $27.60

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out I hopped in the car and drove to Sam’s Club, right?  The amount I saved more than pays for a couple years of our membership!!

Please, I urge you, call around for price quotes on your prescriptions.  I can make a big difference in the amount you spend.
