On Friday we hit the road for an hour long drive to a bustling community garage sale event in Oscoda, MI. We had attended the community garage sale last year for the first time and really enjoyed it so we were excited to go again this year.
We love that it starts on a Friday, which is our favorite day to garage or yard sale. We are blessed that our flexible schedules allow us to escape often on Fridays in the Summer to hit the sales. Remember, we also run an online business and sell items on eBay, so our shopping is really work!
The community sales were in what used to be an Air Force Base. It’s now single family homes and there were over 50 sales! Community sales are the best in our opinion because you can park the car and shop at several sales before having to hop in the car again and drive to the next one.
The first sale we stopped at was not much, it had a set of knock off Louis Vuitton luggage for $150 which was a sure fire sign we were not going to be loading up there. Jim did snag a sheet of sticky numbers for $0.50 to change the numbers on the mailbox so that was a good buy. The owner of that home told us that right down the street was more of an estate sale because her neighbor had recently passed away and the kids were clearing out his home. We were excited to get to that sale based on her description that they were selling everything and there was a lot.
It was true, they were selling everything! Nothing had prices either, which we typically dislike, but in this instance we went ahead and made a pile of items we were interested in and then agreed on a fair bundle price.
As we were walking up to the sale we spotted these 2 purple adirondack style chairs. Just the day before we were sitting on our front porch patio and commented that we should pick up a couple of chairs so we wouldn’t have to haul our nice lawn chairs from the back yard to the front patio when wanted to sit there. Kind of like divine intervention, these chairs came into our lives. In the flurry of activity at the sale with people asking questions and making purchases I asked how much the chairs were. The man responded $8 each and I channeled my bargaining skills and asked if he would take $6 each. Yes! $12 for these 2 adorable chairs is a steal and they are like new. Happiness!
We continued shopping and ended up spending $80 there, but these 2 chairs are the deal of the day. As we were leaving Jim spied the metal rocker with the cushion and asked if they would take $5 for it. I think because we already had bought so much they agreed and we whisked it away to the car. $5? The cushion is like new and the rocker is an instant retro throw back for Jim because his dear Grandpa had one like it that he used on his front porch for years.
Check out our score!!!
The table was actually at another sale that we stopped at about 2 hours later on. Can you believe it matches exactly? I am telling you, the universe wanted us to have the complete set on our patio! $2 later the folding purple table was in the car as well.
$19 for the adorable furniture; that is the way we like to shop!
What have you picked up lately at garage sales that you consider a super score?
