Let The DIY Roofing Begin

Today is THE big day, let the DIY roofing begin.

Well, at least let the dumpster get delivered and the roofs prepped. Since we bought our new house in 2018, we knew that both of the garage roofs needed to be replaced. The lovely blue tarp wasn’t on the roof when we purchased the house; we added that before last Fall. Our intention was to replace both roofs in early Spring but then Covid-19 happened and we became full time mask makers, part of a fabulous local team of sewers (we have made over 13,700 masks to date – all given away).

Anyway, I am sure our neighbors just loved the blue tarp that has been on garage #1’s roof for far too long. Hopefully they said their goodbyes to it because we are ready!

Our house is unique because it has two garages, one on each side of our big old home.

Supply run

Yesterday we visited Menards and purchased what we hope are all of our supplies. We loaded up the van and trailer with 63 bundles of shingles, synthetic roof underlayment, ice & water barrier, starter strips, ridge vents, edge cap and a big old box of coiled roofing nails (thank goodness for the power nailer). It was over 5,000 pounds of DIY pleasure (the guy at the service desk was pretty amazed we were taking it all home at once).  Hooray for the Menards 11% rebate offer that is running now! That rebate form and receipt are already in an envelope ready to be mailed out today.

It is now unloaded, scaffolding is up, branches are trimmed to allow for easy access to the two roofs and we are waiting for the dumpster to arrive today.

It’s happening folks! We can not wait to be able to sit on the patio and glance up at two lovely roofs. In all honesty, we are 99.9% sure our neighbors can not wait either. Bye bye blue tarp ugliness! Let the DIY roofing begin!
