This past weekend we were so excited for our overnight stay at MGM Grand Detroit hotel and casino; we had never stayed at MGM Grand Detroit before or spent much time inside their casino. Because we know so many of you are Michigan and surrounding area readers we want to share our experience with you so that you know if a stay at MGM Grand Detroit is a good fit for  you next trip to the Detroit area.

MGM Grand Detroit

Upon arriving at the casino, which is incredibly easy to get to off of I-75 we were happy to see that they offer a free valet service for all guests. We pulled up and unloaded our overnight bag and we did not have to think about our vehicle after that. This was convenient and well worth the couple of dollars we tipped the valet.

The hotel is upscale, greeting you with stylish decor and details upon entering. We’ve been to Las Vegas and stayed at the MGM property there and we were pleasantly surprised that the Detroit location features the same luxury feel. The MGM Grand Detroit is the only Forbes 4-star hotel in Detroit with the only Forbes 4-star spa in Michigan. It is AAA Four Diamond Award winning and the first and only downtown Detroit hotel, gaming and entertainment destination built from the ground up.

The front desk staff were incredibly friendly and check in was a breeze. The lobby greeted us with an opulent lounge and this gorgeous light fixture that took our breath away.

Our room was on the 14th floor and as soon as we opened the door a big smile came over both of our faces. It was simply lovely! We stayed in on of the 400 guest rooms but the hotel does feature 9 rooftop VIP suites and 56 opulent corner suites if you are looking for a really special adventure.

Having a welcoming sofa was really nice; it felt good to kick off our shoes and relax after a morning of traveling. The bathroom was spectacular and featured 2 sinks, a massive walk in shower and even a television! Yes, a TV in the bathroom complete with remote!

Shortly after arrival we went to explore the restaurants and the casino area. It is very large and the options for eating are plenty. There are 2 signature restaurants by the famous Wolfgang Puck as well as the sports pub TAP (which was really busy as the Tigers were playing), the buffet and an upscale food court. We grabbed a quick tide-me-over at the food court and were impressed with the quality and quantity of the food. We shared a loaded french fries …. it was delicious. At $7 it was fairly priced and easily filled us both up. We’d recommend that if you are looking for something gooey and yummy to eat.

We then left the casino and took a very short drive to the Detroit Riverfront. The weather was gorgeous and the downtown was buzzing with people and excitement as the Detroit Red Wings were playing a playoff game that evening. We walked about 3 miles on the Riverfront and really enjoyed ourselves.
The people were very friendly, and we felt very safe and comfortable. Families and couples were out and about, as well as runners and groups. Here are some photos from our walk. (We didn’t go to the game, but we snapped this photo just because).

After tiring ourselves out we returned to our room to find this! The turn down service was a nice touch and truly made us feel pampered. The complimentary bottle of water was a welcome bonus too.

Our plans were to eat dinner at the buffet but we were not actually very hungry for dinner until late, and the buffet was closing at 10:00pm. We actually found ourselves back in the food court for dinner and Jim enjoyed a burger and fries while I opted for a delicious freshly baked pasta dish from the Red Sauce selection. It was very good, reasonably priced (under $20 for the two of us combined) and very filling.

When we finished eating we spent a few hours playing in the casino. We like to play slots but are very conservative gamblers; usually if I loose $25 I feel a bit guilty and stop. Luckily as I was playing I did hit a Jackpot on the Game of Thrones machine which balanced off Jim’s non-winning night.

mgm_grand_detroit_jackpotWe returned to the room after enjoying a free cup of coffee (complimentary coffee is available 24 hours a day in the hotel lobby) we crawled into our luxury bedding. We slept like rocks as my Gran would say; awaking fairly early the next day.

We were not in the mood for anything heavy for breakfast so we checked out The Roasted Bean coffee shop inside the resort. They featured coffee beans roasted in Royal Oak, Michigan as well as yummy pastries. We picked a scone and relaxed while we sipped our yummy coffee and enjoyed our pastry. It was the perfect breakfast stop for what we wanted.

Sadly we did have to return to the room to pack up and leave. We did play a little more in the casino that morning and my luck had run dry. It was a good thing I was up from winning the night before because it balanced out my unlucky morning. But – Jim was lucky in the morning. He tried a new game (there are nearly 4,000 machines to pick from) and managed to win as well. It was the perfect ending to a magnificent stay at MGM Grand Detroit.

We will definitely return to stay and play again and would recommend this hotel if you are traveling to the Detroit area.
