We have a clever reader who decided to create a birthday cake for her grandson that he would love.  He’s really into the outdoors, hunting and nature – so this is perfect!

Sue shared some photos online and we asked her if we could share them with you too;  she graciously said yes.  Hooray!!  Look how awesome her cake turned out.

She thought of everything!  Using a store bought cake mix she colored and swirled to make it look like camouflage inside as well:

She used figures from play sets her grandson had for most of the decorations.  (She washed them up before placing them on).  She did buy the trees, but they were only $0.25 each at a party decoration store!  And we love the orange M&M for the “fire” with the pretzel logs!

Sue recommends that if you are going to try this you buy the Wilton colors for both cake batter and frosting. She found them at Michael’s, but you can find them at JoAnn’s and probably at Hobby Lobby as well. These colorings come in a paste and provide better results than the liquid type. They run about $2 each, but will last a long time because you only use a little bit.

She used a table knife, stuck in the tip and that little bit made a lot of color; maybe 1/8 teaspoon.

She used canned white frosting as the base to add the coloring too. Just divide the white frosting out into 3 bowls, making 2 shades of green and 1 black. The brown color was canned chocolate frosting (she used this between the layers as well).

The cake batter she colored in a similar way except leaving some of the batter yellow (it was a yellow cake mix). She divided the batter into 4 bowls and made one green, one black and put dry baking cocoa in the 3rd for the brownish color. The 4th bowl of batter stayed as is. Make sure to mix them well!

The yellow batter went into the prepared cake pan first, then a tablespoon of each of the colors in spots over the yellow batter. When all the batter was in the pan, she swirled a table knife around 2-3 times. That is very similar to how a marble cake is made.

We just love this idea because it is a memory making kind of cake.  She said her grandson gave her a big hug when he saw it and said “thank you, I love my cake”.  What else could you ask for?
