SodaStream Review – Should You Invest In One?

For over a year we have been contemplating the purchase of a Soda Stream machine.  We have a couple of friends and family members that own the machine but we were not sure if it was something that would be beneficial for us.

We drink a lot of pop, or soda – whatever you happen to call it.  We drink about 2 cans each per day, so a 12 pack lasts us about 3 days (give or take).  We’ll drink whatever is on sale between Coke products or Pepsi products and we usually aim to buy a 12 pack for $2.50 – $3.00 each.  That means we spend about

We were presented with an opportunity from SodaStream to review their machine so we jumped at the chance to try it out.  We know many of you may be pondering the same questions about Soda Stream, so we thought we’d share with you our experience.

This is what we received:

Reasons we are liking this product:

  • Ease of use.  Once we unpacked the machine and the CO2 cartridge it was a breeze to put together and within minutes we were making our own beverages.  It is nice that you are able to add the amount of carbonation that you desire, based on the number of times you push the button that sends the carbonation into the bottle.  We’ve experimented with a bit to a lot and we find we like it somewhere in between.  The instructions say to  push it 3 times and hear 3 buzzes;  that will give you a lot of carbonation.
  • Saves on space.  We are liking the idea of not having to store the 12 packs of soda pop in the house.  All that is required for this machine is a small amount of counter space and room to store the flavorings.  Speaking of flavorings, we have liked every one we have tried so far.  The Cola Free tastes very much like Coke Zero, and the diet cola is very similar to Diet Coke.  If in a blind taste test I couldn’t pick the difference.  Mr. TCC and the teenage neighbor tried the flavor that is equivalent to Red Bull and liked that too.  Because we received the starter kit that came with a lot of different flavors we will work our way through trying all of them, but honestly we see ourselves buying the cola, cola free and diet cola flavors when we run out.  That is what we drink 95% of the time.  By the way, this machine does not electricity to work, so you do not have to have it located by an electrical outlet.
  • Less waste versus buying a 2 liter.  There have been times when we have bought a 2 liter of pop and some of it has gone to waste because we did not finish it in time before it lost it’s fizz.  Since the Soda Stream makes 1 liter at a time we see this as a way to reduce waste.
  • Flexibility.  When we entertain our family and friends we go through a lot of soda pop.  We have 8 nieces and nephews and they all know they are welcome to as much pop to drink as they wish when they are at our house.  Instead of having to invest in 12 packs or 2 liters of various flavors (some like root beer, some like Sprite, some like orange…) we like the idea that we can whip up 1 liter of their preferred drink of choice.

There is a large amount of flavors to pick from.

  • Better for the environment.  We like the idea of not putting extra trash into the landfill and since you keep reusing the bottle we feel like we are doing a tiny bit to help out Mother Earth!

In summary, we are very happy with this machine and we would recommend it for anyone who drinks soda.  Every variety that we have tasted has been good, a very close match to the popular name brand counterpart.  Even the kids agree, which is saying a lot!
