Why Are Old Cars In This Gorge? Road Trip Discovery

A few days ago on our trip to the Upper Peninsula we were driving and exploring the walking trails around Munising, Michigan. You can find out more about the waterfalls in the Munising area.

We stopped at Tannery Falls and hopped out for a nice walk. This is a very poorly marked waterfall, but well worth the walk. It drops approximately 40 feet; this waterfall is also known as Rudy M. Olson Memorial.

Getting there is super easy; I bet a ton of people drive right by and don’t even notice it. Just drive east on H-58 out of Munising until you reach the Washington Street (also known as Sand Point Road) intersection. There is a staircase leading into the woods on the eastside of the highway. Please make sure to park on Washington Street as you will be ticketed for parking on the highway.

Once we saw the falls we decided to venture off the main walking trail onto a seldom traveled path. At times I wasn’t sure this was the best idea, but I always travel with confidence with Jim and knew he wouldn’t put us in danger.

What we stumbled upon was this array of vintage car parts, nestled in this gorge. Why are they there? How did they get there? We have no idea, but they are sure amazing.

Jim captured these amazing photos and we are so thrilled because we know hardly anyone knows about them. They are not easy to spot on the main trail but we found them.

Pretty cool, eh?
