Walmart Paid Us .36 to Take Away 36 Bars of Ivory Soap – Success Story

Walmart…we have a love/hate relationship with this store because we know they offer great deals at times for coupon users, but whenever we attempt to do one of the blogged about super savings deals our Walmart never has the right size in stock.  We’ve tried quite a few, all without success.

So imagine our shock last night when we scored at Walmart.  We popped into the store on the hunt for a particular item for Father’s Day, and since we were there decided to take our coupons (we took them into the store, like good coupon users) into the health and beauty area to check the clearance for markdowns to match up to any coupons we had.  Nadda, zip, zero.  Nothing even remotely exciting.  As we were exiting we happened to travel up the bar soap aisle and noticed they had Ivory Soap 3 packs for $0.97.  That is a great price, and it just so happens we had been stalking our normal grocery store for a few weeks waiting for these to come back in stock.  At the grocery store the 3 pack is priced at $1.29.

Due to our recycle diving we told you about last month we had managed to acquire 12 manufacturer’s coupons good for $1 off any Ivory soap bar or body wash.  So, with these coupons the soap would be free!  There were at least 40 of the soaps on the shelf, so we in no way did the dreaded shelf clearing as we happily put the 12 3-packs into our cart.  It was a high, a real elation to know that we were going to get these for free;  Kelli even did a little happy dance!

Onward to the cash register, where we scanned the soap at the self service check out machine.  It was funny to see the other shoppers near us watching and wondering what in the world we were doing with 12 3-packs of Ivory soap and nothing else.  We giggled inside as we knew the next couple minutes would make them take notice as we rang in our coupons.   One, two, three, all the way to the twelfth coupon;  merrily we watched the total dwindle.  Both of us had forgotten that Walmart gives overage, so for each 3 pack of soap we were actually making $0.03!

At the end of the transaction the register read -$0.36!  The change machine spit out our profit and we grabbed our bags and walked away.  That was of course after we smiled at the other shoppers who were actually pulling out their wallets to pay for their items.

Thanks Walmart, and Ivory!  We’ll be sharing this bounty with our family and donating much of it to the local church pantry.  Couponing is fun, and you can do this too!
